King of New York Review

It’s Tabletop week and for the occasion, I purchased a new board game. One I felt symbolized my new life in the Big Apple and my relationship with it.

If you read my ode to the subway blog post I wrote a little while ago, you’ll know that I don’t love New York like so many people who live here do. I don’t think it’s the greatest city on Earth. And its overcrowding and sky-high prices get me down a lot. It has so much to offer to anyone of any age, but I wish it did so without a blaring car honk at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday. So King of New York, a game where you literally get to smash up the city, is a strangely satisfying venting process.

IMG_0928This game is an offshoot of King of Tokyo, operating under the same mechanics but in a different megacity. Players play as different giant monsters, alike Godzilla, out to destroy the city and each other. Special dice determine the actions you take, while cards give you extra cool things to help you out as you take those actions. Your aim is to survive and be the first to reach top victory points.

David and I played just the two of us and had a lot of fun. He had been doing really well throughout the entire game, but somehow I was able to steal the lead and win by the end. It really makes for a fun game when one player can come out of nowhere and steal the victory. Playing with two people seems to be able to give one player an unfair advantage than if we had been playing with more players though. Often our games are limited to four players. We often seem to have more than that, so it’s nice that this game plays up to six without being a party game.

In other board games news, we’re looking forward to this Saturday for Tabletop Day! David and I will be participating in a Climate Game Jam at Columbia University to celebrate. While there we will hopefully be helping to create a game that educates on the state of the arctic climate.
